The Secret of Zoom - by Lynne Jonell

Imagine this: You live with your dad in a huge mansion in the mountains, with fences strung up all around with "Trespassers will be boiled" signs.  Up the road is a top-secret orphanage.  You're not allowed to go to school with other kids because your dad is the super-nervous type.  What do you do all day?  Sit around doing computer math programs that you don't even understand.  Life stinks.  Then one day you accidentally discover that your long-lost mother was actually blown to bits when her laboratory exploded and... what?  Laboratory?  Exploded?  It's time to get to the bottom of all of this strangeness.

When Christina, the main character in Lynne Jonell's excellent novel The Secret of Zoom, decided to dig a little deeper, she set the lives of everyone in the area on a tilt-a-whirl, and nothing would ever be the same again.  Through dangerous and daring explorations, singing with perfect pitch, flying an unimaginable plane, and making friends with a nice boy, Christina not only discovered the secret of Zoom, but she uncovered the secret of her family, and as I mentioned, changed things forever.

This is a much more action-packed book for Lynne Jonell, author of the Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat series, and is a delightful read.  The reader is right there by Christina's side as she risks everything to find the truth.  I recommend this for any middle-grade reader who enjoys adventure, friendship, singing, eavesdropping, or garbage trucks.
