Some Opinions

Opinion:  Teachers should be at least as well-read as their students.

Opinion:  Classroom libraries should be HUGE.

Opinion:  Leveled books should not be used extensively for independent reading. Students should learn (well) how to determine appropriateness of books on their own, and should be free to explore their own interests, and read above or below their correct level when it interests them to do so.  We should guide them in this process, and encourage a good balance of genres, topics, and formats, helping them also to realize the benefits of reading Just Right books.

Opinion:  It is a real shame to pick up a library book that is covered with stickers telling you how hard it is or what level you should be to read it.

Opinion:  Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are a mixed blessing.  Yes, they bring reluctant readers into the fold and get books into the hands of those who are put off by novels.  However, when you're trying to help a student figure out if a book is just-right based on their recent reading history and all they've been reading are graphic novels (let's add Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes to that list), it's nearly impossible.  When a book can be read and enjoyed by readers of all strengths it is unifying, but also confusing.

Opinion:  That last opinion doesn't make much sense if you're not a classroom teacher, I'm guessing.

Opinion:  If you've gotten this far, you may want to reconsider how you spend your time.  Log off and go read a book, for goodness sake.  I am not that interesting!
